This book is an expedition through the manifold collections of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections), taking works from the Schenkung Sammlung Hoffmann, a donation of contemporary art, as points of departure. Some 50 positions from the past five decades are juxtaposed with an equal number of historical works, giving rise to unusual dialogues about subjects such as identity, power, memory, beauty, religion and transience. At times, the historical objects connect with current debates in surprising ways, while echoes of the contemporary works ring out from the past.

Dorothée Brill is head of the Schenkung Sammlung Hoffmann, Berlin donated to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Luise Richter is a research associate for the Schenkung Sammlung Hoffmann donated to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Rebecca Schmidt is a curatorial trainee at the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
