The world today is watched by the eyes of innumerable cameras. They observe landmasses, the depths of the oceans, the outward appearances of plants, humans and animals, as well as the makeup of the atmosphere. Through sophisticated algorithms the resulting data is translated into images for the human eye. These translation processes form the basis of scientific knowledge; they serve the control and supervision of industrial productions processes, and, last but not least, they influence control and decision-making in medicine, law and politics. The exhibition and publication project MASCHINENSEHEN offers a peek at the sites where these new technologies for measurement, visualisation and automation are developed. It documents an aspect of our culture which is subject to such rapid change, that current concepts, devices and processes will be irretrievably lost in only a short time. »Maschinensehen« is a cooperative project between HfG | Staatlichen Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe and the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe. This book was published on occasion of the exhibition of the same title at ZKM | Medienmuseum (2 March–19 May 2013).
