Philip Gaißer spent a hot summer in Petömihályfa — a small Hungarian village south of Lake Balaton, where the farmers use overgrown vineyards to cultivate fruit, from which they make Palinka, their potent brand of schnapps. At night the artist took photographs of the dainty fruit as he went past — without looking through the camera viewfinder. The flash of the camera plucks them from the darkness: blue plums, yellow grapes, and velvety peaches thus reveal their true beauty. Gaißer contrasts each image with a page showing a colour gradient corresponding to the colour of the particular fruit. The result is a coming together of a specific natural setting and a moment of photographic reflection.
