»Seven Films« collects seven films Clemens von Wedemeyer made between 2001 and 2008—two of them in collaboration with Maya Schweizer (Metropolis, Report from China and Rien du tout). The publication translates a series of his film works into the medium of the book. Each production is separated by a black page – the filmic equivalent would be black frames. »Seven Films« offers an insight into the conceptual deliberations of the artist which mostly revolve around the medium itself, as in »Occupation« in which his examination of the staging of crowd scenes leads to a reconfiguration of such a scene. As a reference point he employs the cinema itself. As the Spanish theoretician Manuel Segade writes in his essay about Clemens von Wedemayer: »The decade of his film-making constitutes a study of the history of the medium and, simultaneously, a study of film thought, of how this history has been interpreted from a theoretical point of view. His work plays with the repertoire of cinematographic formats, genres and languages in order to provide a critical space for his decisions as a director and the possible positions that can be adopted by the spectators facing the screen itself.«
