Deux soeurs is a compilation of images from Lomé, the capital of Togo in West Africa, which photographer Tobias Neumann visited on a regular basis from 2009 to 2017. Two young women—sisters—are his starting point for recording their family environment with their parents and siblings. Their gaze directs him through the city, which bears the imprint of its colonial past and neocolonial present. Through the two young women, whom he repeatedly photographs on the streets of Lomé, he gets to know other young people. His laconic, desultory shots convey the everyday globalized reality that pertains in one of the world’s poorest countries, recording how the sisters personally assert themselves in it, and their efforts to build a future there or to leave the country. Deux soeurs shows two young women, who are very close to one another, yet whose paths in the end diverge.
