In his monograph From Ulm into the World, Christopher Haaf uses the HfG’s exhibitions to explore the dynamic tension between scepticism at the local level and the accolades that the school consistently received on the international stage. The exhibitions were at once a response to permanent pressure from the outside, ”resorting to going public“ as it were, and the product of the Ulm network, which extended all over the world. They not only allow us to delineate a comprehensive account of the HfG’s eventful history but also reveal how design developed into a global phenomenon in the post-war period.

Christopher Haaf received his doctorate from Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen, and has been a volunteer at the Bavarian State Painting Collections since January 2021.
